In thus doing, the hopeful parent expects their child to grow in their autonomy, carve out a life of self-reliance, and successfully attain their goals in the pursuit of happiness.

Ways and Means of Enlightenment

But some perspectives come not from books or lectures. Many come from life experience and through the enlightenment of the power of the Holy Ghost. In the case of the former, this often comes through the trial and tribulation of painful experiences. The latter often comes through reading and hearing the word of God, prayer, and making and keeping covenants with God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, such as baptism and receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

“…this often comes through the trial and tribulation of painful life experiences. The latter often comes through reading and hearing the word of God, prayer and making and keeping covenants with God.”

In Hebrews Chapter 5, vss 8-9, we read: Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;….

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, learned things through the things He suffered. He gained perspective through things He suffered in mortality. While He came to earth to atone for human kind, He willingly chose to suffer the things that we suffered in mortality when He entered the Garden of Gethemane.

Jesus completed the spiritual portion of the atonement in the Garden of Gethsemane, wherein He took all the mental strains, emotional anguish, spiritual trauma, physical pain, in addition to all our sins, upon Him. He did this to pay the price and remove the stains and heal the scars upon our souls so that we would not have to carry them into eternity with us.

Because of Jesus Christ’s atonement, we can leave our sins at the altar of God and be freed of them contingent upon repentance of our sins, being baptized by one who holds the proper priesthood authority, and receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

After Jesus emerged from the Garden of Gethsemane, He allowed Himself to pass through the physical side of His atonement, starting with His arrested, then He was mocked, spit upon, scourged, then finally–crucified. Soon after, it was upon the cross at Golgatha (place of the skull) where Jesus endured the brutality of a slow, agonizing death.

The crucifixion commenced with the Roman soldiers hammering spikes through His hands and feet, and–because He was a relatively large man–the Roman soldiers also hammered spikes through His wrists to hold His body in place on the cross once set in the vertical position. From that point, He stuggled for air, as the pressure from His fixed arms lifting up on His rib cage compromised His ability to properly take in air. During this agonizing process, He would have to push down with His feet to lift His body up slightly to catch His breath. After nine hours, physically spent, He commended His Spirit into the God the Father’s hands.

The events that took place, from Jesus’ arrest through His “yield[ing] up the ghost” on the cross, completed the first half of the physical portion of His atonement. During the three days while Jesus’ physical body lay in the tomb, He went to the spirit world to continue His work of salvation. It was there, in the world of spirits, where Jesus set up His ministry to preach the gospel to the disobedient spirits (the dead) who rebelled against the prophet Noah, who built an ark wherein eight souls were saved.

On the third day, Jesus took up His physical body once again, upon which the second half of the physical portion of the His atonement was complete, thereby bringing His atonement to fruition.

Because of Jesus Christ’s atonement, all people shall be resurrected! However, where an individual ends up for eternity depends upon their spiritual preparation based upon their decisions, conduct, attitude, gospel compliance, and the intents of their heart in mortality.

The simple truth of the gospel is this: A person’s returning to live with God the Father and Jesus Christ is contingent upon their accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior, repenting of their sins, taking His name upon them at baptism, receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and intentionally striving to learn and live the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the remainder of their life.

As they do these things, the person’s soul will be sanctified through the power of the Holy Spirit, which prepares them to return to live with God the Father and Jesus Christ in Celestial realms (Heaven). For as the scripture teaches us that “…no unclean thing can dwell with God”. (1 Nephi 10:21, Book of Mormon). Therefore, we must be intentionally faithful (though we walk imperfectly) to keeping our covenants with God and do the best we could. As we do these things, then Jesus Christ will extend His grace to us and compensate for our shortcomings and cleanse us of our sins and and heal our imperfections.

While the most important things in this life are for a person to receive a physical body and to accept Jesus Christ and His gospel, life lessons and eternal truths learned here help guide and nurture us so that we might learn and grow in light and truth to prepare to live with God again.

As noted above, this sanctification process occurs in two ways: Through enlightenment of light and truth, and through the instrumentality of things that we suffer. Often wisdom comes via the road of spiritual hard knocks. Emotional Intelligence come by living our lives, with the emotional brain keep track of things in our subconscious. It sees patterns, which over time, show us intuitively when something doesn’t make sense or sound right–though to our intellect, it may sometimes still make perfect sense.

A clever salesperson may communicate a well-rehearsed script of reasons a prospect should buy the product or service he/she is trying to sell. They will have all their rebuttals ready to counter the prospects concerns and questions, as they present their polished presentation. However, a quick gut check by the prospect may communicate to them, “Well, it sounds good, but it just doesn’t feel right. Something is off. Something is just not right with that.”

When we go through painful experiences, we gain the perspective of suffering. We understand what it feels like to experience physical trauma, mental anguish, emotional pain. In mortality, we may come to understand what it’s like to be lonely, isolated, left behind, unvalidated, unappreciated, forgotten, misunderstood, slandered, stigmatized; treated with hostility, contempt, prejudice and discrimination because we don’t fall into categories that meet the approval of certain others.

Jesus Christ, though sinless, chose to suffer all that human kind suffers! He chose to take upon Himself all the pains of the human race so that He might succor those who need to be succored.

To succor is to give aid, assistance, support during times of hardship and distress. Because Jesus Christ experienced all pain that every human that had lived, does live now, and will yet live in this world, He received the ultimate in spiritual education in what it is like to live in this human condition called mortality. On a deep spiritual level, He gained the advanced lessons of the ultimate extreme of human suffering, experiencing–to the fullest degree–every whit of human pain among the human race!

Because of this, He understands our suffering and knows how to succor us according to our needs. He knows how to bless us; comfort us; lift, us; strengthen us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. He’s been there and done that on a spiritual plane that we could barely scratch the surface of comprehending.

The Irony of Suffering

When we suffer, we have the sacred opportunity and privilege to become a little bit more acquainted with our Savior Jesus Christ. Because He had been through the gauntlet of extreme pain, trial and tribulation, we can understand comparatively a tiny bit of what He experienced: We can feel the pain and anguish He experienced for us!

Every bump, jarring, trauma, disappointment, emotional hurt, mental strain, pang of guilt due to sins committed and sins of omission (not having done good things we should have done), He took upon Himself in Gethsemane. He experienced every pain that runs the gamut of our collective human experience in mortality. So exquisitely did He experience our personal traumas, that He is now uniquely positioned to heal and comfort us in this life–and negate our suffering in the next.

Because of Jesus Christ’s atonement, we can leave our sins at His altar and move forward in mortality with peace and joy–then on to Eternal Life in the world to come! As we follow Him, our experience in suffering becomes a valuable tool within us to do as He did in mortality–“lift up the hands which hand gown, and the feeble knees” (Hebrews 12:12).

Through the eye of faith, our sufferings in this life can therefore serve as teaching tools to help us catch a micro-glimpse into what Jesus experienced in the Garden of Gethsemane for us. He paid the price! Then, as we emulate Him through love, empathy and compassion–which He distills upon us through the Holy Spirit–we become His eyes, ears and helping hands to serve others as He served in this world.

What peace this brings to my soul that I could be free of spiritual bondage through Jesus Christ, by virtue of His atonement and redeeming love! What joy I feel as a strive to emulate Him in my own imperfect way to help and serve others in their times of need.

Won’t you come and lay your sins at the altar of Jesus Christ?
